Summary:
The Special Education Moderate Needs Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA), under the Executive Director of Special Education, will provide job-embedded guidance and support to Moderate Needs Program teachers. They will serve as the main contact for developing and coaching the Moderate Needs Teacher role, offering expertise, professional development, and coordination for Resource Teachers and administrators in the early stages of implementation. This role involves aligning the moderate needs support layer through training, coaching, and on-site visits. Knowledge of special education laws, including IEP and I-13, is essential, as well as strong interpersonal and communication skills, and experience working with students with learning needs.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as implementation consultant for Resource Teacher Moderate Needs positions. This includes developing the role in partnership with the Directors of Special Education, and coordinating with other Special Education Specialists, provide guidance documents, attending frequent meetings for alignment, conducting on site visits, problem solve with teachers and administrators.
- Trainer and coach for Resource Teacher Moderate Needs staff in non academic areas such as executive functioning, scheduling, and behavior interventions.
- Provide professional development and training for district staff on the Moderate Needs support framework, emphasizing its goal of keeping students in the Least Restrictive Environment.
- Collaborate with leadership regarding school based referrals and recommend levels of support increases or decreases in partnership with special education referrals.
- Consult and collaborate with BVSD Literacy, Math and MTSS departments in ensure alignment.
- Attend weekly department meetings to share information, updates, and challenges with the role.
- Monitor the implementation of the Moderate Needs support framework, including collecting data to assess its impact. Share findings with the department leadership team and identify areas for improvement.
- Provide schedule support and guidance to principals and staff.
- Provide guidance around expanding Moderate Needs, including middle and high school transitions.
- Create and support a culture of equity and inclusion that values, accepts, and understands diversity and the impact of culturally responsive practices. Understand and identify barriers in classroom instructional practices that contribute to disproportionate outcomes for underrepresented groups of students.
- Exhibit a growth mindset through participation in high quality professional learning; actively participate in the evaluation process through goal setting, reflection, and development of new strategies and techniques.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required:
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Minimum of 5 years as a special education classroom teacher.
- Special Education Teacher or Director license in Colorado
- Experience teaching non academic skills such as behavior and executive functioning.
- The READ Act SB 19-199 (PDF) and SB22-004 (PDF) requires that all Colorado teachers who provide literacy instruction to students must earn a "READ Act Designation" by meeting specific requirements. Preferred:
- Skills and experience in collaboration and co-teaching with classroom teachers and support professionals. Training or experience in serving English Language Learners (ELL) students.
- Technology and software skills and experience-(Infinite Campus and Excent).

Salary Placement varies according to experience and education.
