Summary:
The Sustainability & Energy Officer provides districtwide leadership, strategic direction, and operational oversight for Boulder Valley School District’s sustainability and energy programs in support of the district’s Sustainability Plan, Board policy, Strategic Plan, and healthy learning environments. Leads the district’s commitment to integrate sustainable practices, including knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors, into BVSD’s physical place, educational programs, and organizational culture. Responsible for the implementation, monitoring, and reporting of district sustainability goals related to energy, water, waste, renewables, greenhouse gas reduction, indoor environmental quality, and resource conservation. Oversees utility budgeting, data analysis, sustainability performance metrics, and related capital and operational initiatives. Coordinates and leads sustainability committees and actively engages students, employees, families, and community partners in advancing regenerative sustainability. Provides oversight of district electric vehicle charging infrastructure and supports long-term planning for transportation and site electrification.
Responsibilities:
- Lead, implement, monitor, assess, update, and report on the district Sustainability Plan, associated Board policy, and related district sustainability priorities. Ensure alignment with the District Strategic Plan, Facilities Master Plan, and other district operational and planning efforts. Serve as the lead staff member supporting the District Sustainability Advisory Committee and other relevant committees, design teams, and leadership groups. Prepare regular updates and reports for district leadership and the Board of Education.
- Collect, analyze, monitor, benchmark, and manage district utility and sustainability data, including electricity, natural gas, water, irrigation, sewer, waste, recycling, composting, renewables, greenhouse gas emissions, and related resource consumption and costs. Oversee utility dashboards, metering, interval data systems, and sustainability performance metrics. Prepare regular reports and recommendations to support data-informed decision making and continuous improvement.
- Identify, develop, and implement districtwide strategies, standards, and initiatives to improve sustainability performance in areas such as energy efficiency, waste reduction, greenhouse gas reduction, water conservation, indoor environmental quality, renewable energy, sustainable purchasing, and sustainable operations. Provide recommendations to district leadership, principals, and other decision makers regarding sustainability priorities and investments.
- Develop, administer, and monitor the district’s utility and sustainability-related budgets. Oversee forecasting, cost control, financial analysis, and accountability for utilities and related sustainability initiatives. Negotiate and manage contracts, purchase orders, service agreements, and vendor relationships related to utility services, waste programs, sustainability projects, and associated operational needs.
- Supervise assigned staff and programs, including sustainability and energy support staff, interns, student researchers, or other assigned personnel. Direct workload, set expectations, provide coaching and professional development, and conduct evaluations.
- Collaborate with Maintenance, Operations, Planning, Transportation, Information Technology, and Bond/Capital Construction staff to identify, prioritize, and implement sustainability, electrification, and energy-efficiency improvements in existing facilities and new construction. Provide technical input on project scope, equipment and system selection, design standards, commissioning, retro-commissioning, and lifecycle cost considerations.
- Initiate, pursue, and coordinate grants, rebates, incentives, and partnerships related to sustainability, energy efficiency, renewable energy, waste reduction, electrification, and EV charging infrastructure. Ensure grant-funded projects are implemented, monitored, and reported in accordance with program requirements.
- Lead and advance districtwide sustainability efforts by integrating sustainable practices into facilities, programs, and organizational culture. Collaborate with students, staff, families, and partners to support sustainability goals, coordinate committees, and align initiatives with district priorities, including the Green Youth Council and Seal of Climate Literacy. Provide training, conduct energy audits, and build school-based sustainability capacity while supporting sustainability initiatives across the organization.
- Lead and support district renewable energy initiatives, including solar photovoltaic projects and other emerging technologies, by evaluating opportunities, developing recommendations, coordinating implementation, and identifying funding strategies and partnerships.
- Research, maintain, and apply current knowledge of best practices, emerging technologies, regulatory developments, and innovative models related to sustainability, energy management, public sector climate action, healthy buildings, and educational institutions. Represent the district in professional networks, community partnerships, and intergovernmental collaborations.
- Oversee district electric vehicle charging infrastructure, including planning, installation, operations, and maintenance. Manage vendors, user access, utilization monitoring, and policy and rate recommendations, while leading long-term expansion planning. Collaborate with Facilities, Transportation, Finance, IT, and utility partners to support electrification goals, charging reliability, and future needs.

Qualifications:
Required:
- Bachelor’s Degree with a major pertinent to the position requirements: Sustainability, Environmental Studies, Engineering, Education, or Science.
- Minimum of three years supervisory experience in: Hiring, training, managing, and implementing sustainability programs, policies, and strategic plans, preferably in an educational setting or large organization.
- Completed and submitted BVSD online application.
- Communicate (read, write, and speak) in English.
Preferred:
- Experience leading student, staff, and community engagement efforts, including committees, advisory groups, educational initiatives, or culture-building programs.
- Demonstrated project management experience and collaboration skills in working with different committees, organizations, and audiences.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships and communicate effectively with students, colleagues, and families.
- Additional experience preferred: Energy Management, Building Automation Systems, Dashboard Systems, Commissioning.
- Demonstrated ability to successfully create new projects within a K-12 setting, understanding of how to institutionalize ongoing and new sustainability efforts, and how to develop programs that advance our strategic objectives and mission.
- Demonstrated knowledge of sustainability policy, practices, processes, and assessment (annual reports, strategic planning, return on investment calculations, climate action plan, greenhouse gas inventories, etc.)
Salary Information:
Salary Range 7: $89,313 - $111,642
Salary Placement varies according to experience and education.
*Pay range listed above is for employees newly hired to BVSD or current BVSD employees that are new to the employee group (existing employees currently in this unit please refer to the pay range on the appropriate salary schedule).
