Summary:

The role of the McKinney Vento Specialist at BVSD is to remove barriers pertaining education for students undergoing housing transitions that qualify for McKV services per Federal Mandate/CDE regulations. The specialist provides advocacy for expedited enrollment, assures appropriate transportation supports, communicates with school for added supports and refers to outside organizations as deemed adequate. Additionally, in the role of Child Welfare Liaison, the liaison represents the BVSD with various city and county agencies to support students who have been referred to or might be a potential candidate for various social services.

Responsibilities: 

  • Review and respond to McKV referrals- which have been submitted by email, fax, phone, or in person, and evaluate for qualification.
  • Inform school McKV liaison and other pertinent BVSD staff and external individuals (such as case workers), as well as families, of qualification and responsibilities/rights (via phone, email communication or in person).
  • Communicate with BVSD enrollment, school registrars and school McKV liaisons regarding McKV qualification of student(s) to expedite enrollment and/or to provide effective supports (such as waived fees, school supplies and additional emotional support as deemed adequate).
  • Distribute letters of student qualification (indicating rights as well as school and BVSD contact information) to McKV school liaisons to, in turn, distribute to the students/families at each school.
  • Communicate with Nutrition Services to report identified students who should receive free meals through McKV.
  • Connect and communicate continuously with Boulder County Housing and Human Services to refer, update and discuss TBRA- Tenant Based Rental Assistance Program (partnership between BVSD and St. Vrain McKV and Boulder County) as well as other entities in the area (such as EFAA Emergency Family Assistance, SPAN- Safehouse, Shelters and other).
  • Record, submit request and monitor transportation modes for McKV students (gas reimbursements, RTD vouchers, School bus through Alternative Transportation requests) distribute RTD tickets, calculate gas reimbursements.
  • Create presentation and documentation- update McKV school liaison Reference Notebook- for all McKV school liaisons.
  • Attend CDE work sessions, as well as other community meetings (both internal and external to BVSD-including meeting with direct supervisor), to become well informed and to inform correctly of procedures, law, available supports and collaborations- build partnerships.
  • Develop McKinney Vento Title X Grant application in collaboration with BVSD grant specialist (every 3 years) and submit subsequent yearly reports to CDE.
  • Provide welcoming environment and readily provide information and resources to families and staff- Continuous assembly of updated materials, pamphlets, applications, courses, etc.
  • Maintain accurate, well-organized and detailed historical record of students qualified to receive McKV services each school year, for at least 5 school years.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: 

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree 
  • Minimum of one year experience working in a school environment.
  • Communicate (read, write, and speak) in English.
  • Completed and submitted BVSD online application.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish (must pass BVSD Spanish Translator/Interpreter assessment)

Preferred:

  • Able to utilize appropriate technology, ie, computers, email, word processing, spreadsheets, presentation programs, etc. to fulfill the responsibilities of communication, documentation, and reporting.
  • Competent interpersonal relationship skills in order to meet, work cooperatively, and collaborate with BVSD departments and schools as well as city, county, and state agencies.
  • Must be able to competently build relationships with students and families in order to assess needs and direct services of support.

Salary Information: 

Salary Range 1:$62,404.00 - $93,605.00

Salary Placement varies according to experience and education.

*Pay range listed above is for employees newly hired to BVSD or current BVSD employees that are new to the employee group (existing employees currently in this unit please refer to the pay range on the appropriate salary schedule).
