The Hiking Club Sponsor is responsible for the organization, safety, administration, and overall leadership of the student Hiking Club. The primary objective of this position is to foster a passion for the outdoors, teach environmental stewardship, and promote physical wellness through organized group hikes and educational meetings. The Sponsor oversees all aspects of the club, including student registration, mandatory trip documentation, and clear communication with parents, school administration, and emergency services. This role demands an individual who prioritizes student safety above all else, possessing strong wilderness risk-management skills, sound judgment in changing outdoor environments, and the ability to effectively supervise students off-campus.
Responsibilities:
- Trip Planning & Execution: Route, scout, and select age-appropriate hiking trails. Monitor real-time weather and trail conditions, making definitive go/no-go safety decisions for excursions.
- Student Supervision: Maintain strict student accountability and active supervision during transport and throughout the entirety of outdoor activities.
- Safety & Compliance: Ensure all student participants have active, completed registration forms and emergency contact information on file before every outing. Maintain a fully stocked wilderness first aid kit on all trips.
- Student Mentorship: Teach basic trail etiquette, Leave No Trace principles, navigation skills, and proper outdoor preparedness (gear, hydration, and nutrition).
- Communication: Coordinate logistics and schedules directly with school administration, parents, and transportation services.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Must be 21 years of age, or older.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Complete and submitted BVSD online application.
- Communicate (read, write, and speak) in English.
Preferred:
- Must be available after school, evenings and weekends.
- Knowledge of all aspects of high school activity programming.
- Proven leadership qualities and successful experience in working with high school students.
Salary Information:
Salary Placement varies according to experience and education.
*Pay range listed above is for employees newly hired to BVSD or current BVSD employees that are new to the employee group (existing employees currently in this unit please refer to the pay range on the appropriate salary schedule).
