Summary:

Horizons K-8 School, located in South Boulder, has a rich history of academic excellence. Our 383 students are in classes of approximately 20-22 in multi-age grade bands, guided by an exemplary group of teacher leaders. Position Description:

The Director of Finance is a full-time, school-based management position responsible for overseeing all financial operations at Horizons K-8. This role is critical to maintaining the fiscal health and operational efficiency of the school. Reporting directly to the Head of School and working closely with the Board’s Finance Review Committee, the Director of Finance ensures accurate financial reporting, compliance with Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) and state regulations, and alignment of resources with the school’s mission. 

The following statements of duties and responsibilities are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this position. These statements are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties and responsibilities required of this position. Duties may be assigned by the Head of School (HOS) not outlined in the Essential Duties and Responsibilities listed below.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

Financial Management & Reporting:

  • Develop and maintain the school’s operating budgets in collaboration with the Head of School, faculty, and Finance Review Committee.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for school leadership, the financial review committee, and the Board of Directors.
  • Monitor revenue and expenditure forecasts and ensure funds are used in accordance with the Horizons budget and applicable laws.
  • Serve as the bookkeeper to ensure alignment with the district general ledger.
  • Remain aware and abreast of financial trends, grants, and funding availability that could impact the school operating budget.

Accounting & Bookkeeping:

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, and journal entries.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records in accordance with GAAP and school policy.
  • Manage procurement and purchasing processes including expense report processing and reimbursement requests.

Payroll, Benefits & Human Resources:

  • Process payroll accurately and on time, in alignment with BVSD systems and timelines.
  • Administer employee benefits, ensuring proper enrollment, updates, and documentation in compliance with applicable policies.
  • Act as the primary liaison between school staff and BVSD regarding payroll, benefits, and related inquiries.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential personnel files in accordance with school, district, state, and federal requirements. Activities in this regard consist of but are not limited to: Collection and maintain employee and vendor paperwork; Stay current on HR policies and procedures, ensuring the school remains compliant with evolving regulations; Provide expert guidance and support to the Head of School (HOS), Assistant Head of School (AHOS), the Board, and the Finance Review Committee on payroll, benefits, and HR matters, and proactively find answers when information is not readily available. 

Compliance & Grants:

  • Collaborate with external accountants for annual tax submissions.
  • Ensure school licenses and applicable statuses are valid.
  • Track and report on grant funding, including local, state and federal sources.
  • Ensure compliance with all financial reporting requirements from the district, state, and regulatory agencies.
  • Assist with annual financial audits. 

Strategic Financial Planning:

  • Provide financial insight and forecasting to support school leadership in long-term planning.
  • Analyze trends, risks, and opportunities to support decision-making by the Head of School and Board.
  • Participate in discussions on enrollment, staffing, fundraising, and capital investments with a financial lens. 

Systems & Controls:

  • Maintain internal financial controls and ensure efficient financial procedures.
  • Evaluate and improve financial systems and software tools used by the school.

    Qualifications: 

    Required:

    • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business administration, or a related field.
    • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
    • Advanced knowledge of excel.
    • Commitment to transparency, integrity, and collaboration in financial management.
    • Ability to communicate financial information clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
    • 3–5 years of progressive experience in nonprofit, public-sector, or school finance.
    • At least 1 year of experience working in a K–12 educational setting, with a strong understanding of school operations, culture, and funding models.
    • Experience conducting financial audits and implementing controls to ensure future success.
    • Experience using legacy accounting software with an eye to the future.

        Preferred:

        • Master’s degree in business administration, finance, or a related field.
        • CPA or equivalent credential.
        • Human Resource experience.
        • Experience migrating and deploying new robust account software (Sage, QuickBooks etc.) and financial reporting systems.
        • Familiarity with BVSD or Colorado school regulations and funding mechanisms.

          Salary Information: 

          Salary: Commensurate with experience and position on the Horizons K-8 Teacher Salary Schedule which can be found via the Horizons K-8 website.Up to five years of prior experience will be considered for salary placement. Salary will be pro-rated based on FTE.
