Summary:
Provide a sanitary and safe environment for students, staff, and the community. The Lead Custodian performs custodial services and supports daily custodial operations to ensure facilities are clean, safe, and well maintained. This position participates in routine, seasonal, and project-based cleaning; reviews custodial work to ensure cleaning standards are met; assists with training; and communicates cleaning, equipment, and maintenance needs to the head custodian. The Lead Custodian supports event setup and breakdown, building security, and system monitoring; communicates effectively with school staff and administrators; and serves as essential personnel during emergencies, closures, or crisis events as directed.
Responsibilities:
- Clean and sanitize areas of the building, including classrooms, offices, student and staff restrooms, stairwells, cafeteria, hallways, library, and other common areas, using approved cleaning practices, procedures, and custodial equipment. Remove interior and exterior trash and transport waste to designated disposal areas.
- Participate in deep cleaning, daily, summer, seasonal, and project cleaning schedules and complete annual online training courses.
- Review custodial team members' work to ensure cleaning standards are met and redirect tasks as needed to support daily operations; communicate cleaning and equipment matters to the head custodian; assist with training; and provide feedback as requested.
- Coordinate and assist with setup and breakdown for special events and meetings; unlock and secure areas as needed and provide customer support.
- Perform seasonal and project-based facility work, including snow and ice removal in areas not accessible by plows; mowing and grounds maintenance in areas not accessible by ride-on equipment; tree trimming; exterior window cleaning; and participation in assigned summer, seasonal, and deep-cleaning projects.
- Demonstrate effective communication (verbally and written) with the principal, teaching and custodial staff, students, and community members. Write and respond to emails from teaching staff and administration.
- Secure the building by arming the building security alarm, locking classroom and office doors, closing windows, and turning off lights. Check and lock exterior doors by walking the perimeter of the building.
- Monitor buildings lighting, plumbing, electrical and mechanical systems (boilers, uni-vents, etc). Repair/report issues to head custodian. Respond to, and report appropriately, issues such as alarms, water leaks, fires, mechanical/electrical failures and gas leaks. Perform Integrated School Pest Management (IPM).
- Serve as essential personnel during emergencies, weather or environmental events, and school, facility, or district closures, and participate in the school’s crisis management plan as directed by the principal or incident commander.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Completed and submitted BVSD online application.
- Communicate (read, write, and speak) in English, must pass English component of interview process.
- Ability to be on feet up to eight hours every day.
- Ability to perform physical labor, including heavy lifting of up to 50 pounds; occasional dual lifts of up to 100 pounds and requires ability to frequently reach, lift, bend and stoop; may occasionally require climbing ladders or crawling.
- Must pass a practical test and also a written test.
Preferred:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience operating custodial equipment and tools.
- Ability to recognize safety issues in the workplace.
- Positive communication, interaction and work experience with diverse people.
