Summary:
The Head Custodian is responsible for the day-to-day operation, cleanliness, safety, and readiness of the school facility and serves as the on-site lead for custodial operations. This role coordinates and guides custodial work activities, supports cleaning standards and schedules, monitors building systems, and performs custodial, maintenance, and seasonal duties. The Head Custodian works collaboratively with school administration to support building operations, fulfills staff requests, assists with deliveries and event setup, and ensures compliance with safety and training requirements. This position does not have formal supervisory authority but provides functional leadership, training, and day-to-day direction to ensure custodial services are delivered effectively.
Responsibilities:
- Open the building for staff and students by arming and disarming alarms, unlocking designated entry doors, classrooms, and offices, and turn on lights. Conduct routine building and grounds inspections to identify safety or maintenance issues; remove litter and graffiti; and report vandalism or damage, both interior and exterior, in accordance with district procedures.
- Fulfill requests from staff and administrators; distribute delivery of warehouse orders and education materials to the appropriate classrooms. Demonstrate effective communication (verbally and written) with the principal, teaching and custodial staff, students, and community members. Write and respond to emails from teaching staff and administration.
- Maintain staff and student restrooms throughout the day (clean and re-stock with hand soap and paper products as needed). Clean and maintain hallways and general areas during the school day by picking up debris and trash, and sanitizing frequently touched areas.
- Set up and break down the Cafeteria for breakfast (if applicable) and lunch.
- Setup and breakdown for sporting, special events and meetings. Locking/unlocking areas for access and providing customer support.
- Monitor and order custodial supplies and maintain safety data sheets (SDS) for chemicals that are being used in the facility.
- Complete annual online training courses. Attend the required annual asbestos training in-service. Perform visual asbestos inspections of the school premises.
- Monitor custodial team cleaning standards and building systems, including lighting, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical. Identify and report maintenance needs, respond to building alarms and emergency situations, and support Integrated Pest Management (IPM).
- Perform minor repairs and facility improvements such as assembling furniture and locker repair; minor equipment repair and painting. Report repair of building deficiencies that are beyond ability and time to the maintenance department.
- Train, coach and guide the work of building custodial staff, in all aspects of custodial maintenance. Direct the work of custodial staff, maintain timesheets and provide input on staff evaluations to administration. Assign and monitor custodial work areas. Develop and ensure completion of daily, summer, seasonal, and project cleaning schedules. Participates in these projects.
- Perform seasonal and project-based facility work, including snow and ice removal in areas not accessible by plows; mowing and grounds maintenance in areas not accessible by ride-on equipment; tree trimming; exterior window cleaning; and participation in assigned summer, seasonal, and deep-cleaning projects.
- Respond as essential personnel during emergencies, weather or environmental events, and school, facility, or district closures, and participate in the school’s crisis management plan as directed by the principal or incident commander.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Complete and submitted BVSD online application
- Communicate (read, write, and speak) in English, must pass English component of interview process
- Ability to be on feet up to eight hours every day
- Ability to perform physical labor, including heavy lifting of up to 50 pounds; occasional dual lifts of up to 100 pounds and requires ability to frequently reach, lift, bend and stoop; may occasionally require climbing ladders or crawling
- Must pass post offer physical.
Preferred:
- Bilingual English/Spanish
- Experience operating custodial equipment and tools
- Ability to recognize safety issues in the workplace
- Positive communication, interaction and work experience with diverse people
Salary Information:
Salary Placement varies according to experience and education.
*Pay range listed above is for employees newly hired to BVSD or current BVSD employees that are new to the employee group (existing employees currently in this unit please refer to the pay range on the appropriate salary schedule).
